The 6-Day Marangu Route is one of the most popular ways to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, offering an incredible journey with an additional acclimatization day. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, it’s the only route with hut accommodations, providing a unique and more comfortable experience as you climb toward Africa's highest peak.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced hiker, the 6-Day Marangu Route offers a well-paced trek with stunning views, diverse landscapes, and the opportunity to reach the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. This climb includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, which greatly increases your chances of a successful summit.
Itinerary for 6-Day Marangu Route
Begin your trek at Marangu Gate. The hike is through dense rainforest filled with flora and fauna, such as monkeys and exotic birds. You’ll reach Mandara Hut, your first stop for the night
Hiking Distance: 8 km
Duration: 5-7 hours
Ascend through the moorland zone, where the vegetation starts to thin out. You'll reach Horombo Hut, where you'll spend an extra day for acclimatization.
Hiking Distance: 12 km
Duration: 6-7 hours
Spend the day resting and acclimatizing to the higher altitude. You can take a short trek to the Mawezi Tarn for a great view of the peaks.
The trek to Kibo Hut takes you through an alpine desert with little vegetation. You’ll arrive at Kibo Hut, where you’ll prepare for your summit ascent.
Hiking Distance: 10 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
The climb to Uhuru Peak begins at midnight, as you trek through the night to catch the sunrise at the summit. After reaching the top, descend to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.
Hiking Distance: 18 km
Duration: 12-14 hours
Descend back to Marangu Gate, completing your climb and receiving your certificate for summiting Mount Kilimanjaro.
